Australian Sentinel AC1 tank

The Sentinel AC1 was Australia’s first domestically designed and mass-produced tank, developed during the Second World War when the threat of Japanese expansion and shortages of imported armour created an urgent need for local production. Entering production in 1942, the Sentinel featured a distinctive one-piece cast hull and turret and was armed with a 2-pounder (40mm) gun. A total of 65 AC1s were completed. Although the Sentinel never saw combat, it represented a remarkable achievement for Australia’s wartime industry and paved the way for the more heavily armed AC3 and experimental AC4 designs.
