In this volume of Time-Life Books' classic history of World War II, you'll read about these elite bands of highly skilled men. The book begins with an account of the Germans' spectacular capture of the seemingly impregnable Belgian fortress Eben Emael on the opening day of Hitler's spring 1940 offensive. Confronted with the unlikely task of penetrating the massive stronghold's outer defenses of moats, minefields, barbed wire and heavy guns, a team of specially trained German troopers in gliders landed on the roof of the structure and wrestled it from the astounded defenders in less than two days.
